Job Description--Principal Engineer in Division 505, Work and Resource Management Gainesville Regional Utilities, the 5th largest municipal electric utility in Florida, seeks a Principal Engineer for the Work and Resource Management Division who will perform high level, independent, professional and technical work with a focus on Electric Transmission Planning. The primary attribute of this position will include knowledge of Industry (NERC) standard Electric Transmission planning, engineering, design and reliability maintenance practices. The successful candidate will be required to support a wide variety of projects, both as an individual contributor, project leader, and team leader.
To be considered for this position you must possess a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree and six (6) years of experience in electric utility transmission planning, engineering or analysis. A valid U.S. Driver License is required at the time of hire; a valid Florida Driver License is required within 30 days of start date.
The ideal candidate will have experience or certification in the following areas:
• Thorough and complete understanding of overhead electric transmission engineering, design and permits with excellent knowledge of electric transmission system functionality. Extensive experience in large electric utility capital projects a must. • Ability to perform the necessary computer simulations and transmission planning studies required to evaluate the electric transmission system to establish short-term and long-term transmission development plans in compliance with all applicable NERC reliability standards. Also oversees the development of required technical processes related to assigned reliability standards. •Ability to perform duties of Transmission Planner as defined in NERC Reliability Standards. Ensures that the Utility meets all NERC reliability standards for Transmission Planning, and support full compliance with all applicable FERC, NERC and FRCC requirements • Ability to perform and document power system studies associated with system reliability, transmission and generation interconnection requests, load additions, and power transfer capabilities
• Knowledge of FERC, NERC, and FRCC policies, procedures and standards is desired, including familiarity and understanding of FERC-approved Open Access Transmission Tariffs' language. •Good understanding of NEC and NESC and other applicable codes and local ordinances including rules, regulations and guidelines established by local regulatory agencies. • Knowledge of mathematics, electrical principles, alternating current and physical science as applied to electric utilities • Ability to perform engineering planning, feasibility studies, cost estimating and economic analysis including technical report writing. • Ability to prepare periodic electric transmission system reports regarding transmission facility characteristics and ratings, demand and energy forecasts, capacity resources and demand response. • Excellent organizational, report writing and presentation skills.
